Bambang Soesatyo, Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia, formally nominated the Visions of Peace Initiative for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize. As the spokesperson for the People’s Consultative Assembly which includes 711 legislators; 136 senators and 575 representatives, Chairman Soesatyo explained, “The Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly fully supports the Visions of Peace Initiative (VOPI) and hopes that it will be awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. The VOPI has inspired hundreds of thousands of young Indonesians through its more that 53 live events that have been held throughout the Republic as well as its significant virtual digital presence.”

Chairman Soestayo also expressed his personal appreciation for the VOPI saying, “I am sending my full support for the VOPI to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. The Visions of Peace Initiative embraces the Ethic of Reciprocity, also known as the Golden Rule, the universal value that is included within all faiths and traditions.  This Ethic of Reciprocity teaches us to “Do Unto Others As You Would Want Done For Yourself and Not to Do Unto Others As You Would Not Want Done To Yourself. This value is central to our Republic’s national motto.

Since its launch in 2017, the Visions of Peace Initiative has imparted and continues to impart a meaningful understanding of the ethical behavior that can be achieved through the value of reciprocity. In fact, each of us, not just the young, needs to remember the Golden Rule as well.”

In addition to the nomination by Chairman Soestayo of the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia, the VOPI has also been nominated to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee by the Chairman of the Senate House AA LaNyalla Mattalitti, and H. Muhammad Farhan, SE, member of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia.

Chairman Soestayo proudly noted that, “Every national legislative body has officially nominated the Visions of Peace Initiative for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize.  Never before, in the history of our Republic have our legislative institutions expressed collective support for a non-governmental organization.  I hope that this tribute will inspire everyone who has already participated in the VOPI and those who are yet to participate in the future, to work together to promote peace and tolerance in our homes, our schools, our communities and in our nation.”

The Visions of Peace Initiative has been honored to have also been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Prof. Dr. Ir. Oktovian Berty Alexander Sompie, Rector of the Universitas Kristen Indonesia Tomohon and by Dr. Ephraim Isaac, Director of the Institute of Semitic Studies at Princeton University. Both of these respected academicians have prioritized the importance of the VOPI’s teaching the young about civility.

In recognition for the nominations, Visions of Peace Initiative founders, Princess Cheryl Halpern and Prince KPH Dr. Damien Dematra encourage everyone to appreciate Alfred Nobel’s comment that, “Good wishes will not ensure peace.” They urge us all to, “Remember that civility and peace require a steadfast commitment to instill in every generation an understanding of the ‘Ethic of Reciprocity.”

Chairman Soestayo concluded saying, “I, for one, will do what I can to join the Vision of Peace Initiative in this important mission.”
